“I responded greatly to her poems.

They are moving and illuminating. Her

work deserves to be recognized.”

Surfaces

In a dark theater masked lovers are kissing,
figures immobile at a walk light.
Gold-winged Gabriel knees at table edge to whisper:
there’s a bomb on the kitchen counter.
At open French windows the blue girl gazes on the pale green
mermaids of a North Dakota riverbank.
This woman’s face is tight as a Brazil nut.
Give me truths, for I am weary of the surfaces.
